So many people along the way have asked me, why fashion?? Just the other day on my flight from Paris to NYC, someone saw me editing photos on the flight and asked me, why fashion?
There are so many reasons why I love fashion and have devoted a career to it, starting from the age of 16 with my first retail job. That’s when I technically started, but I think I was about 5 when I started making clothes for my dolls, of course with all the seams sewn on the outside. I starting altering and personalizing my own clothes about that same time.
For me, fashion has always been about the art, and less about the label. Though the label can offer the access to the craftmanship, materials and resources to make the most beautiful pieces of art in the world, like this dress from the Badgley Mischka Spring 2014 collection from New York Fashion Week. Everything about it is gorgeous.
One of the things that I love about fashion, is the moment when you see something that is emblazoned in your mind, you are struck by the beauty, inspired by the ingeniuty and it leaves a lasting impression.
Like so many love songs, you wonder how it is possible to create and recreate something so magical on the same pretenses over and over again.
For me, watching a runway show is the culmination of all the elements. The beauty in the art of the hair and makeup. The stride of the models to the music chosen to create a mood that helps you go on a journey in the designers mind.
I love that I studied in school some of the techniques on how to achieve the constructions, and that I’ve been to the sewers and textile makers around the world that are supplying materials to create these creations. Beautiful, authentic suppliers like Solstiss lace, a French mill that works with all the labels we love.
It helps to understand even more deeply all of the labor and love that goes into each collection by an entire team of people working around the world to create a vision.
I also appreciate that season after season, I’m still truly inspired by things I see. Having worked in forecasting for trends of the future, it’s always amazing to see the new colors appear on the runway, the colors we actually started researching a year prior to the shows. It’s how the designer twists the palettes and put accents together that makes each collection look so different from a color point of view. Notably pink that dominated the runway, yet looked so different in each presentation.
I actually fall in love a little bit each season and my photographs are a post card of some of those moments to share with you such as the one of the Badgley Mischka dress at the turn on the runway.
The most special to me is the friends that I have made along the way. Working on projects together around the world, so many cultures brought together to achieve the crafts that we work on in each idea. I work with such dedicated and impassioned people!
So, those are just a few of the reasons why fashion is so special to me, but then there are too many layers to describe in one post. So, until the next time we talk about this I will continue to share these little moments with you.
Now, what I’d really like to know is what do you love about fashion? What inspires you and your style?
