The spirit of the rebel runs free, thoughts on the Belstaff Autumn Winter 2014 collection
When you think of Belstaff you conjure images of cool pilots in bombers wearing aviators. Or, Steve McQueen on his motorcyle. Does it get any more fierce than that?
I had a chance a few seasons ago to sit down with Chief Creative Officer Martin Cooper in his New York City design office. We were talking about his inspirations for the collection and, the opening of the Madison Avenue flagship in NYC. “I want it to feel like it’s been there all the time”, Cooper said.
With swatches of the worlds best leathers and materials on his desk, it was clear that Cooper’s passion for every detail was coming to life. While this will be his closing act at Belstaff, his vision has been accomplished.
As you walked around the shadowy, industrial space you found a creative installation. The models were on platforms illuminated with dots of light, almost like stars poking through darkness.
Beauty for the Belstaff Autumn Winter 2014 show(you can go backstage with us right here) gave an edgy girl vibe. The demeanor was inspired by the “youth rebellion that rocked the UK in the late ’70s & early ’80s”.
These are jackets and coats that every city girl wants to wear. Contemptuous yet genteel and well tailored. One of the looks I liked best paired back to a black grounded small floral print on silk. The print was inspired by Staffordshire porcelain designs in the 20’s, during the decade Belstaff was born. The softening of light weight fabrics back to warm, sturdy styles felt familiar, easy for running out of the house to brunch or down the street for a coffee.
Of course, you found details that hearken back to the Belstaff Roadmaster jacket with the classic bellows pockets, and 4 pocket styles.
The material mixing of leathers, meltons, shearlings and tweeded wools made you want to look closer at each piece. You found the novelty up close. Kind of like a great perfume, you don’t realize just how lovely the scent is until you are really close.
