They have this really interesting retrospective of French artist Jean Cocteau going on at the Palais Royal right now in Paris. Apparently he lived at the Palais Royal at 36 rue de Montpensier, in a tiny home connected making this his playground.
While I was walking around from shop to shop exploring Cocteau’s sketches I vaguely remembered studying in art history that Jean Cocteau and Coco Chanel were great friends. More details about that can be found on the Chanel website.
I was walking around Palais Royal and seeing the various shops that were showing his works or works inspired by him. Works like this colorful print on the scarf in the headline image of this post at a pretty shop called Épice by Danish designers Bess Nielson and Jan Machenhauer. They were kind enough to let me photograph the print, it’s so vibrant!
Then later, a sketch Cocteau made of Chanel wearing a silk dress in 1937.
There is this letter, almost a love letter, dating back to 1957 with a sketch in ink and colored pencil showing the great friendsip of Jean Cocteau and Coco Chanel. The translation is something like this.
“my very very dear coco. i crossed paris like a hunting nomads flying arrow of a bow; if this paris did not get you back I would have been saddened but my loyal tenderness will never leave you. i love you jean”
